Rocca di Cambio

Rocca di Cambio, 23 km from the capital, is a small mountain town located at the northwestern edge of the Altopiano delle Rocche, in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. The plateau is guarded by numerous peaks - Monte Rotondo, Monte Cagno, Monte Ocre and Cefalone - all above 2000 meters, which especially in spring and summer are privileged destinations for those who love trekking and walking in the mountains. Rocca di Cambio offers in winter the slopes of Campo Felice, famous throughout the Central Apennines, and to cross-country skiing enthusiasts the tracks of the nearby Piani di Pezza. With its 1434 meters above sea level is the highest municipality in the Apennines. The historical news on Rocca di Cambio and on the first inhabited nucleus are scarce. According to some sources, it is certain that the village was located where the Church of Santa Lucia is now located; but it is only from the Middle Ages that the references to the country become more frequent. It is no coincidence that some of the most interesting vestiges of the area date back to that time. The most recent history of the town is similar to that of other countries in central and southern Italy. Foreign dominations (Angioinians and Spaniards), terrain of influence of the great families of the papal throne (Colonna and Barberini), endemic emigration. This resort of the Velino-Sirente Park is a summer and winter holiday destination, frequented by thousands of people.
