Caves "li Muri" - Atri (TE)

The "Li muri" caves can be reached via a steep flight of steps about 800 meters from Porta Macelli. The entrance is located in the North-West, to reach them you have to take a section of the state road to Silvi; coming from the historical center, in the Carabinieri barracks area, you must take the first road on the right. From there it is very easy to continue alone thanks to the signs. These are probably the first houses dug into the rock by the original visitors to the area. Later, in Roman times, it seems that they were used to make a cistern, a large reserve of water, kept at a low temperature due to the underground position. The complex of caves so far explored, has a trapezoidal shape, with a surface of 700 square meters on three floors. Unfortunately, today the state of the caves does not allow easy access, so the visit is recommended only if you know the area well and certainly with adequate equipment. The complex of caves so far explored, has a trapezoidal shape, with a surface of 700 square meters on three floors. Unfortunately, today the state of the caves does not allow easy access, so the visit is recommended only if you know the area well and certainly with adequate equipment.
