Coastal Holm-Oak in Torino di Sangro (CH)
Established in 2001 to protect one of the few coastal forests of the Adriatic, the Regional Nature Reserve "Lecceta di Torino di Sangro" extends from the mouth of the river Sangro for 175 hectares up to about 115 m altitude, on the hill where it is located the British War Cemetery.
Its symbol is the terrestrial tortoise, of which the protected area is home to a large population. The morphological and microclimatic variability of the area has given rise to various habitats, the largest of which is represented by the holm oak and oak woods, with over 400 plant species, including some rare specimens of orchids, more than 230 species of butterflies and lepidopterans in general and 60 species of birds. The reserve is adequately equipped for guided tours or free excursions with refreshment points and picnic areas.
